How the Extra Place Overlay Works

Bookmakers often pay 4 or 5 places on horse races to compete, while exchanges (like Betfair) only pay for the top 3 places.

The Strategy: Back the horse each-way at the bookmaker, and lay it on the exchange for both win and place (top 3).

If horse wins: Break even (both sides pay)
If horse loses: Break even (neither side pays)
If horse places in top 3: Break even (both sides pay)
If horse places 4th or 5th: YOU WIN BOTH SIDES! Bookmaker pays, exchange doesn't (only covers top 3)

This is the closest thing to "risk-free" in horse racing matched betting.
